The Liar

Masque
Alfresco returns for its eighth Summer Park Tour with free public
performances of Goldoni’s
The Liar. This is a wonderfully
slapstick commedia dell’arte farce involving two sets of
star-crossed lovers, out-of-touch pompous old men, free-wheeling
servants, plus a comedic central character who invents over-the-top
stories, when the simple truth will do. Lelio, the Liar simply will
not tell the truth even when his life and future
depend on it.
Sounds familiar? But Goldoni was writing comedies in the 18th
century – long before Jim Carrey or politicians “borrowed” his
ideas. This summer we feature two women in the traditional geezer
roles of Dottore and Pantalone, as a way of honoring outstanding
female talent in Portland. Masque Alfresco uses commedia slapstick
comedy and improvisation techniques, but will update
The Liar
with contemporary social/political references. Bring lawn chairs,
blankets, picnics, and your funny bones. We are family friendly –
children and leashed pets are always welcome!
