About the show
The Servant
of Two Masters deals with two sets of star-crossed lovers. Pantalone, a
Venetian Merchant (ooops - wrong play!) agrees to marry his daughter,
Clarice to his business partner, Federigo, but Federigo is killed in a duel
by his sister Beatrice's lover, Florindo - so Beatrice steals her dead
brother's identity to look for her boyfriend incognito. Meanwhile, Clarice
promises to marry Silvio, her true love, until Beatrice shows up as Federigo
to claim his/her bride. Truffaldino tumbles into Venice (literally) and
hires himself out to both Beatrice and Florindo - with two masters, he
reasons he'll get twice as much to eat! But he mustn't let either master
know of the other's existence - a nearly impossible feat, since they're
staying at the same inn and Truffaldino finds himself serving dinner to both
of them at the same time. Silvio, feeling heartily rejected, rails about
like a loose cannon, even to the point of alienating Clarice! Will Beatrice
and Florindo ever find each other? Will Clarice ever forgive Silvio? Will
Truffaldino ever get enough to eat? And how does a flying rubber chicken
figure into this mess?
This is commedia dell'arte at its funniest, with broad strokes of slapstick
humor and witty dialogue as current as the headlines from today's news.
