About the Show
Arnolphe has
the perfect plan: raise his future wife from infancy, closely
guarding everything she learns and experiences. He procures Agnes as
an orphan from a beggar-woman, boards her in a secluded convent
during her childhood, then keeps her locked up in his mansion as his
ward – so that none of the taint of the outside world can seep in to
spoil her natural innocence. But the best laid plans of all fanatics
are bound to go astray. When Horace, the son of Arnolphe’s distant
friend, first comes to town, he sees Agnes sighing from her balcony
and they both fall in love. Horace later runs into Arnolphe, and
unaware that the old fanatic has changed his name to keep up with
fashion, spills the beans about his plans to run away to Agnes. Thus
begins the hysterical battle between an impulsive youth and a
stodgy, control-freak, with Agnes as both the prize and unschooled
partner in crime. Throw in two crafty servants who’re just trying to
get through the day without upsetting their master, massive amounts
of slapstick sight-gags, plus current social and political
references, and you have a recipe for timeless humor. A good time
will be had by all – except perhaps Arnolphe.
