The Miser impales all that is mean, selfish, and penny-pinching embodied in a single archetypical figure. We never learn the reasons for Harpagon's extreme behavior, but are thrust headlong into its effects in the midst of a totally dysfunctional household in which everyone has a scam or scheme going—as they must to survive under such a miserly master.
